What are the Causes of Adjustment Disorder?
Genetics can influence how you perceive, interpret or respond towards the world surrounding you. If you have a familial history of anxiety and adjustment disorders, there is increased likelihood that you will have trouble coping with stressors and other anxiety triggers.

Basically, the major cause of adjustment disorder is a living stressor. As mentioned earlier, adjustment disorder for adults is as a result of stressors relating to marital disagreements, finances, sexual abuse, politics or work. Among teenagers, it may be as a result of parent's marriage conflicts, exam phobia, family, social classes, sexuality, and relationships. It may also be out of the death of a loved one, changes in life ( e.g. school), unanticipated catastrophes and medical conditions such as cancer and contraction of HIV and subsequent treatments.

How well you respond to stress depends on economic situations, support from friends and relatives and occupational or recreational opportunities. Vulnerability to stressors includes factors such as coping strategies, genetic makeup, intelligence and social skills.

What are the risk factors associated with adjustment disorder?
If you were a troubled child with high levels of stress, you may be vulnerable to developing the adjustment disorder. The family history of anxiety disorders or other mental health conditions and pre-existing mental disorders put you at a higher risk of developing this disorder. The loss of a loved one is a very high-risk factor as it will affect you emotionally and mentally having to adjust to the complete absence of your loved one.

If as a child you witnessed fights that led to separation and finally the divorce of your parents, that is also another risk factor since it could have been traumatic and hard to adjust to living with just one of your parents. Postpartum depression or the adoption of a new child also places you at risk since you must learn to adjust to having someone new to cater for.

Changes in the environment such as moving to a new home or school, having no social skills, lack of coping skills and exposure to chronic stress or stress triggers and being a victim of physical or sexual abuse could also result in the development of adjustment disorder.
