What is Acanthosis Nigricans
Acanthosis Nigricans is a skin pigmentation disorder that is characterized by dark patches that are velvety in nature. They appear mainly on skin folds; the neck, groin, armpits and on the knee folds. They are believed to be a sign of an underlying health problem in a person. It is common to both men and women and commonly occurs to the overweight people and people who tend to have dark skin. It is also common to those people with diabetes.

What are the Causes of Acanthosis Nigricans
Acanthosis Nigricans can be caused by high insulin levels in the bloodstream. Insulin helps to break down carbohydrates in the bloodstream into glucose which is used as energy and the excess stored in the body. Too much insulin in the body causes the skin cells to multiply rapidly producing a lot of melanin in the skin, melanin is responsible for the dark pigmentations on the skin. Resulting in darkening of the skin especially to those people whose skin are dark. Therefore the presence of Acanthosis nigricans is a strong indication of the future possibility of getting diabetes. Kids who develop Acanthosis nigricans are at a risk of contracting diabetes later in life. It is therefore important to have the disorder checked and treated by the doctor as early as possible.

Acanthosis nigricans is also believed to be a side effect of some medications. These medications include birth control pills, chemotherapy, bodybuilding pills, growth hormones in a human being, medications for thyroid disorders and any other medications that are said to cause changes in insulin level in the blood.

Acanthosis nigricans can also be caused by other underlying diseases in the body like the presence of tumor in the body, pituitary gland infections, cancers that can affect the production of insulin, like pancreas cancer and even adrenal gland disorder in the body. Having Acanthosis Nigricans checked and tested by the doctor can reveal the cause early enough and treatment started before the cause advances to a severe stage.

Acanthosis nigricans can be inherited. It is also good practice to have the family history of the person as part of the diagnosis, so as to take appropriate measures early enough.

What is the Diagnosis of Acanthosis Nigricans
It is easy to identify Acanthosis nigricans by just looking at the skin. The symptoms are easily seen by naked eyes and hence ruling out any other skin condition. The next diagnosis is to test insulin level in the bloodstream which may include testing the levels of blood glucose in the blood. These tests aim at identifying the root cause of abnormal insulin levels in the blood. Normally the pancreas is responsible for the production of insulin which aids in breaking down carbohydrates into glucose and released it into the bloodstream to be used as energy by the body. If the insulin is either inadequate or in excess, it results in diabetes diseases in the body which if not controlled can be fatal.

The doctor may also recommend an x-rays and skin biopsy if they don’t find any problem with the insulin. The doctor also takes a detailed description of a person which includes the daily activities the dietary pattern of the person, the medications taken by the person and even checks the possibility of having a chronic illness which could be the cause of this disorder.
