Achalasia

What is Achalasia?
Achalasia is a condition that affects esophagus. The esophagus is the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach; it aids the movement of food from the mouth to the stomach. Achalasia affects the masculine ring that is at the end of the esophagus to the stomach, making it fail to open and close as it should do, preventing food from reaching the stomach. This is a serious condition that should be treated as fast as possible because a human being leaves on food. This condition is more common on the middle-aged persons and older people but it is uncommon to children. People with autoimmune disorders are at a risk of getting Achalasia.

What are the Symptoms of Achalasia?
Achalasia’s symptoms appear mildly and become severe with time. Most patients are treated for gastroesophageal diseases and left to go home. The first symptom that people with Achalasia will notice is difficult in swallowing foods both solid and liquid; feeling like food is being stuck in the throat which can also raise the risks of choking on food. You may experience coughing during the night, chest pains, heartburn, pain and discomfort during and after eating and bad breath. Drastic loss of weight is also one of the symptoms to watch for. The symptoms become worse on using certain foods; of which if a person stops using these foods the symptoms disappear and can be mistaken for being fine.

What are the Causes of Achalasia
The actual cause of Achalasia is unknown; however, it is believed to be a heredity disorder. Family historic is needed in order to start medications once the symptom starts. It may also be caused by an autoimmune condition in your body whereby your body’s immune system starts attacking healthy cells in the body.

Achalasia can also be caused by your lifestyle like smoking which can also cause cancer of the esophagus later in life. Achalasia is also believed to be caused by a parasite called Chagas commonly found in South America with some study showing that Achalasia can be a viral disease.

Diagnosis of Achalasia
Doctors insert a special tube with a camera in your esophagus as you swallow a process called Endoscopy, the tube reads and records all the activities of the muscles moving in the esophagus. Then the doctor studies the findings to check the possibility of Achalasia to recommend the appropriate treatments.

The doctor may also perform an X-rays in the esophagus to find out the condition and functionality of the muscles. He will observe the movement of foods through your esophagus to look for the problem a process known as barium x-ray. Doctors can also use esophagus manometry. This a procedure of monitoring the pressure in and out of the esophagus so ascertain the abnormal movements of the inner muscles. The procedure involves insertion of a special tube that has sensors in it, through the mouth or the nose to the lower end of esophagus

What are the Treatments of Achalasia
Achalasia treatment is mainly focused on the treatment of the lower muscular ring of the esophagus. The treatment may be through the use of pneumatic dilation of the lower end of the esophagus to expand the opening. The doctor may insert a balloon kind of ring at the lower muscle of your esophagus and inflating it to enlarge the muscles.

The second alternative doctors can carry is known as a Laparoscopic procedure which involves the surgery of your esophagus. This procedure is carried out by inserting laparoscope inside esophagus through the stomach walls; it finds the lower end of the esophagus and removes it by cutting it altering the size of the lower muscles in and increasing its diameter to ease movement of food.

Although most of these surgeries are successful, there is always a possibility of having other complications develop later in life due to this procedure. It is therefore important to have your doctor check you regularly to check for any possible problem that could be developing.

If the above two procedures are unable to be carried out due to one reason or the other, doctors may also use Allopathic medications that dilate the narrow parts of the esophagus opening easing food movements. They inject Botox to treat Achalasia. Botulinum toxin injection is administered through endoscope process to treat the lower muscle ring of your esophagus by relaxing and dilating the esophagus lowers muscles by paralyzing the nerves around your esophagus.
Drug treatment is also used for the treatments of Achalasia. Nitrate or Calcium channel blockers can be used to unblock the narrow or blocked part of the esophagus. The drug is taken by putting one or two pills on the tongue an hour before a meal. These drugs dissolve and the liquid drains on the blocked part unblocking it. However, continued use of these drugs may be unpleasant to the user due to its side effects. Doctors may also prescribe eating of liquid food or eat solid food together with liquid to aid smooth movement of food to the stomach.

Prevention and precautions of Achalasia
The major precaution of Achalasia is the improvement of your immune system by eating immune boosting foods. Achalasia can be managed by taking small bits of food at a time which should be in liquid form for ease movement of food down the stomach. There no particular diet that is believed to treat Achalasia. Following doctor’s instructions will help heal faster after a successful surgery. You may resume taking solid food as soon as two weeks.

If Achalasia is left untreated for long it may develop to more complicated disease like lung infections, pneumonia and even cancer of the esophagus. Having learned the symptoms you should consult your doctor as soon as possible who might refer you to a specialist. Learning the basic information about Achalasia can help to be aware of early symptoms. Important information about your health can be found readily in books and on the internet.
