Abdominal Strain

What is abdominal strain?
Abdominal strain caused by damage to the abdominal muscles when the muscle tissue overstretches. The damage can include an injury to any of the abdominal wall muscles, when the muscle tissue tears.

Symptoms of abdominal strain

The symptoms of abdominal strain can include, but are not limited to, swelling and bruising in the abdominal area, muscle pain that gets worse with movement, muscle spasms, stiffness, inflammation, and soreness or redness.

Abdominal pain can be caused by accident or injury, excessive exercising or performing exercises or sports activities incorrectly or improperly, lifting heavy objects and sharply twisting the body. For example, when you exercise too vigorously or apply improper techniques during the exercise routine, the muscles stretch to a point where they contract forcefully.

Risk factors of abdominal strain
The risk factors that can increase your chances of getting abdominal strain can include overexertion of muscles, exercising in cold weather, performing exercises incorrectly without stretching, having weak back muscles, being tired and fatigued, and participating in forceful activity. Athletes that perform sporting activities regularly are often at risk of straining their muscles, which is why it is important to have proper training and supervision.

Diagnosis of abdominal strain
To diagnose the issue, your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and medical history. Physical exams and tests can include x-ray, ultrasound and MRI. The muscle strain is tested for the severity level. The physical exam may also involve the doctor checking for tenderness in the region where you are experiencing pain to rule out any other causes.

There are three degrees of muscle tear or strain—the first is when only the muscle fibres are a little injured or damaged, the second is more severe damage to the fibres, and the third is when there is complete damage, such as a rupture, to the muscle. When the muscle tears, it can damage your blood vessels, which can cause a lot of pain and soreness. More extreme cases can display bruising and visible inflammation.

If left untreated, the abdominal strain can become complicated and develop into a herniation of the intestines. This can be caused when an internal organ or connective tissue pushes through the weakness in your abdominal muscles.

Treatment of abdominal strain
There are multiple treatments of abdominal strain, including homeopathic treatments, acupuncture and acupressure treatments, psychotherapy treatments, conventional or allopathic treatments, surgical treatments, or dietary and herbal treatments.

Homeopathic treatments focus on relieving the pain and inflammation. The homeopathic treatment is a holistic natural-based treatment that considers the person as a whole, including past history and current state of body and mind. The treatment lays emphasis on improving immunity and bodily functions. Some common homeopathic medicines used for treatment in this case are belladonna, bryonia, Ran B, Rhus Tox, Mag M and Borax.

Dietary and herbal remedies can also be used in some cases to decrease the strain and provide pain relief. For example, German chamomile (matricaria recutita) is a medicinal herb that has been used for centuries as a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic. It is an extremely effective treatment for abdominal pain as it contains vital oils and other therapeutic substances. It may be employed in the form of a tea, salve or vapour. The herb has a calming effect which may soothe you during this time of pain. Massage therapy using lavender oil has also been used. Dietary remedies can include increasing the intake of lean meat and vitamin C. Your weight can also be a factor in increasing the risk of the issue becoming more complicated.

Another option is treatment through acupuncture and acupressure. Acupuncture proves beneficial in the treatment of strained abdominal muscles because it alleviates the myofascial pain. Doctors may also recommend physical therapy for treatment of pain in the abdominal wall. Acupuncture and dry needling are useful to provide pain relief and assist injury rehabilitation. According to acupuncture theory, chi circulates in the body along twelve major pathways, called meridians, each linked to specific internal organs and organ systems.

Psychotherapy is a form of treatment that has been studied in terms of its effectiveness in helping people with abdominal strain. In this treatment, the patient is taught healthy ways of thinking and coping behaviors to help reduce suffering. A therapist will teach relaxation and other pain management skills to relax the muscles and ease the mind.

Allopathic treatment employs conventional methods to help address symptoms of abdominal pain. Conventional allopathic treatment methods may help to provide momentary relief from the symptoms.Depending on the degree of the strain, the treatment will likely begin with immediate first aid such as cold therapy using ice packs applied at regular intervals, and rest. This can evolve into anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen to reduce the pain and swelling. Over the counter medication has been known to give relief in many cases. The doctor may also recommend electrotherapy, using ultrasound and laser treatments.

If the abdominal strain becomes worse and is diagnosed as a hernia or appendicitis, a surgical procedure may be necessary. After undergoing surgical repair, it can take up to 10 weeks to recover, with additional physical therapy as recommended by your doctor.

To prevent abdominal strain, some precautions and preventions must be taken when performing certain activities. It is important to not overexert the muscles, so avoid rigorous exercising without proper applications of techniques, lifting heavy objects and continuing to work when you are fatigued. It is important to take some time for recovery, and to maintain good muscle strength. If going back to exercising after a period of time, start slow and then gradually increase the vigour levels of the exercise. When exercising, make sure to stretch properly before and after the activity, using ice and heat to relieve any soreness and massaging your aching body parts. Lifting heavy weights at work or home can increase the risk of strain, so it is not only important to lift objects properly, but also maintaining the right posture when lifting something heavy. It helps to wear an abdominal belt or binder when performing such an action. It is important to understand your body’s limitations and pay attention to the symptoms.
