What is Abdominal Distension?
Stomach distension is swelling of an individual’s belly with an embarrassing feeling of distress and general change in the person’s stomach. When your stomach has convoluted, and grown larger than normal, your stomach is said to be swollen or distended. Your stomach feels heavy, uncomfortable, and painful; and you feel totally awkward. Stomach distension is very common, and a lot of things can cause it.

What is the cause of abdominal swelling?
One or a combination of issues can cause your stomach to swell. It may be as a result of pregnancy, or just because you have consumed too much food. Your doctor is the only one who is equipped to tell you the exact reason you have a swollen stomach. Overeating causes it; too much gas causes it. If you have gulped too much air as a result of a trigger in your nervous system, you can have gas which will certainly cause your stomach to swell. If you have eaten too much of food that contains fiber, your stomach will swell. Other causes of stomach distension include obesity, enlarged bladder, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, Pregnancy, fibroids

Irritable bowel syndrome

Ascites
When fluids build up in your stomach, a condition called ascites is said to occur. This water buildup is usually as a result of an issue with your liver. When your liver is scarred, a problem like cirrhosis develops and causes fluids to build up in your stomach. Over time, with the accumulation of the fluids you start to notice symptoms. Treatment of Abdomen Distension

Home treatments
Stomach swelling can easily be handled at home depending on the causes of the distension. Of course, if the cause of your distension is over-feeding, you could without further anxieties relax and give yourself time for the food in your stomach to digest. You could consider eating smaller meals at a time to forestall future occurrences. You could consume your food more slowly, giving the food in your stomach enough space and time to process.
If your problem is as a result of gas, then avoid foods that have high gas content or fiber. Avoid broccoli, beans, cabbage, and cruciferous veggies. You have taken that carbonated drink one time too many. Avoid it. Avoid anything that makes you gulp in air, such as drinking with a straw.
If you have lactose intolerance, try as much as possible to avoid dairy products. Increase your intake of fiber in the case of IBS, and if it’s ascites, rest a lot and reduce your intake of salt.

Medical treatment
If you have done all you needed to do at home such as resting and reduction of your salt intake but the symptoms still persist, talk to your doctor. He might suggest the use of diuretics to help your kidneys remove the fluids accumulating in your stomach causing distension. Use of strong antibiotics can help remove infection if your ascetic fluid is infected. If your swollen stomach is from IBS or your intolerance of lactose, there’s little any medical treatment can do for you.
You can discuss a plan of care with your doctor. Ascites emanates from cirrhosis. By paracentesis your doctor can have the fluid in your stomach drained for your relief.

When should I seek medical attention?
It may be that your swollen stomach is not the result of a serious ailment. However, if you notice your stomach getting bigger and bigger, and there are other symptoms that come with the swelling in your stomach like nausea and fever call your doctor.
