ACL Injury

What is ACL Injury

ACL injury or Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury happens when this ligament gets teared inside the knee joint. During this injury, you may hear or feel a pop, the knee may stop working and you might fall. This injury is one of the most common injury of the knee. The athletes who are a part of high demanding sports like football, soccer or basketball are more often suffer from this injury of knee.

In case your anterior cruciate ligament is injured, you will require a surgery to gain back the complete functioning of your knee. The treatment further depends upon various factors like your activity level and your injury severity.

Symptoms of ACL Injury
There are some symptoms which can indicate an ACL injury. The person getting an ACL injury will hear or feel a pop sound. This pop sound will be followed by severe pain and a person having ACL injury will get his/her knee swelled. If you have an ACL injury, you might get the instability feeling.

When someone gets ACL injury, he/she undergoes pain along with swelling. The knee swells within 24 hours and if you ignore, the pain and swelling may resolve on their own. However, it is never recommended that the injured person returns to the sport because this may lead to instability of knee and risk remains that your knee might get further damaged. The meniscus (cushioning cartilage) of the knee might get damaged.
Causes of ACL Injury

There is no specific reason for ACL injury. This injury can happen anytime to anyone but active persons are more inclined to get hurt. If you are playing some sports or doing some fitness activity, there remain chances to get this injury. When someone lands awkwardly during the jump, he/she may get ACL injury. If any person falls during skiing downhill or meets a motor vehicle accident, the chances of ACL injury remains high.

Risk factors of ACL Injury
The biggest risk factor of ACL injury is being a woman. Many studies are conducted and it is found that female athletes have more probabilities to get an ACL injury in comparison to male athletes. The reason for this is proposed that the difference in muscular strength, neuromuscular control, and physical conditioning leads to more injuries in women. Another reason why women are more prone to ACL injury is the difference in lower extremity (leg) and pelvis alignment, ligament’s increased looseness, and the estrogen effects on the properties of ligament.

Complications of ACL Injury
When a person suffers from ACL Injury and does not take proper treatment, then the situation becomes complicated and may lead to knee osteoarthritis.

Diagnosis of ACL Injury
There are various measures by which ACL injury can be diagnosed. These measures mostly include tests like physical exam of the affected person. After that your doctor may suggest you to undergo some tests like X-ray, MRI, Ultrasound and Arthroscopy. Although the doctor gets a hint from observing the condition of the injured person but to be more precise about the injury and recommend further treatment, the doctor will ask to undergo tests.

Description of ACL Injury
The problem with ACL injury is that almost 50 percent of such injuries when occur damages other knee structures like meniscus, articular cartilage, or any other ligament. The injured ligaments are regarded as “sprains” and these sprains are graded according to the severity.

Grade 1 Sprains

In this grade, there is a mild damage in the ligament. There is a slight stretch in it but the ligament in this condition is still enough to keep the joint of knee stable.
Grade 2 Sprains

In the grade 2 sprain, the ligament is stretched to the point where it loses the hold. This kind of sprain is often referred as a biased tear of the ligament.
Grade 3 Sprains

A sprain is called as a grade 3 sprain when the ligament completely gets torn off. In such cases, the ligament splits into two pieces and the knee joint becomes unstable.

A thing to note is that the partial ACL tears are rare and most of the ACL injuries are complete tears or near to complete tears.

Treatment of ACL Injury

Homeopathic Treatment of ACL Injury
If there is any problem in ligaments, then homeopathic treatment proves to be very helpful. As homeopathic treatment believes in treating a person as a whole, so the physical as well as pathological condition of the person is considered. With homeopathic treatment, a person’s energy system is balanced, immunity is improved and body functions properly. The root cause of injury is cured naturally through homeopathic treatment. Some homeopathic medicines commonly used to treat ACL injuries are Rhus Tox, Arn, Symph and Ruta.

Acupuncture Treatment of ACL Injury
Acupuncture is well known for healing the injured tissue. It relieves pain, improves blood supply and supports healing.

Surgical Treatment of ACL Injury
A surgical treatment of ACL injury mostly brings success. There are two surgeries involved namely Arthrocentesis and Surgical reconstruction. In Arthrocentesis, the knee joint gets a needle inserted in it and all the excess fluid inside it is drawn off. The surgical reconstruction usually involves the surgery to be performed arthroscopically across the small incisions around the knee joint. To guide the ACL graft’s placement, camera is used.

Dietary and Herbal Treatment of ACL Injury
A person with ACL injury should eat lots of anti-oxidant rich vegetables and fruits. The foods which contain Vitamin C and the sources of high-quality protein like lean meats and salmon should be consumed.

Other Treatment of ACL Injury
The other treatments of ACL injury include compression wrap and wrapping an elastic bandage around the knee. Another kind of treatment is use of crutches because wearing crutches helps to avoid complete weight on the knee after ACL injury.
Precautions and Prevention of ACL Injury

As a precaution and preventive measure of ACL injury, you should focus on strengthening your hamstrings. Proper techniques should be followed in every risky activity. You should do the stability and strengthening exercises, plyometric exercises, aerobic conditioning and training of risk-awareness.
