Achilles tendon is a fibrous code located at the back of your heel that connects the muscles and controls the movement of your foot up and down when raising it at the ankle. Achilles tendon Rapture, therefore, is a condition that arises when Achilles tendon raptures completely or partially. When this happens you can hear a pop sound followed by a sharp pain emerging from the back of your leg that affects your ability to walk properly. It is mainly caused by vigorous activities of the legs like sports that involve running and stretching. It affects people from the age of 30 years and above. The rate of getting Achilles tendon rupture is 1 in 15,000 people at any given time, which can be reduced in cases of physical activities like sports to become 1 in every 8,000 people.

What are the Symptoms of Achilles Tendon Rupture?
The first symptom you will notice is the popping sound during rapture followed by Severe pain at the back of your leg which will make it difficult to walk properly, swelling of the heal, inability to move your leg normally as well as the inability to stand with the toes of the injured leg. You may feel the tenderness of the muscles at the back of your leg.

What is the Cause of Achilles tendon rupture?
The rapture is normally caused by the sudden stretch of Achilles tendon which can be brought about by Vigorous exercise, increased intensity of recreational sports, falling from a height and stepping in a pitch. It can also be caused by a deep cut at the back of your ankle and anything else that can cause excessive stretching of Achilles tendon could cause the rupture.
Achilles Tendon rupture can also be caused by weakening of the muscles of your body which can be caused by many factors some dietary or others physical activities. Some of these factors could be as a result of diseases like gout, arthritis which can weaken these areas. How is Achilles tendon rupture Diagnosed?
By physically examining the heel by touching and feeling the tenderness of Achilles tendon, the doctor can easily tell whether a rupture has occurred or not. He may also move your toes and the whole foot up and down, if it fails to move, there is an indication that rupture has occurred. An MRI scan can also be used to view the extent of the damage whether it is a complete rupture or a partial one in order to determine the kind of treatment to administer.

What are Treatments for Achilles tendon rupture?
The treatments of Achilles tendon rupture usually depend on the severity of the rapture. It also depends on the age of the patient and the activities he does in order to determine the best method to use. Sportspersons and young people may undergo a surgery whereby a small incision is done at the back of the heel to expose the tendon then the doctor joins the broken parts by stitching. This is kinder fast and permanent procedure to treat the rapture. However, surgery may result in complications later on in life. Some of the complications include infections and instances where tendons become shorter after the surgery which may cause another rupture in the same place. Also, clots forming in the bloodstream after the surgery is commonly seen which can bring major problem in life.

Doctors may administer special drugs at the back of the heel if the rapture was partial. This procedure is ideal for people who are not doing vigorous activities. Taking pain relievers and resting the leg on crutches is another approach that can be used especially to old people who do not prefer a surgery to be carried on their body. Although some people may opt for a non-surgery procedure, it might take longer to heel and there is a possibility of the Achilles Tendon Rupture re-occurring in future.
Doctors may also recommend wearing a plaster cast on the leg for several weeks in order to avoid movements of the leg around the injured tendon to speed up healing.

After treatment is administered the doctor may recommend rest as well as physical therapy to strengthen your muscles and be able to walk well after the surgery. Some people may regain their normal posture by the end fourth and the sixth month will doctor’s follow-ups for another month.
