ADHD

What is ADHD
ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is amongst the most common mental disorder which develops in children. Millions of children are affected with it and this disorder mostly continues into adulthood. Many persistent problems like impulsive behavior, hyperactivity and difficulty in sustaining attention are combined during ADHD.

The ADHD affected children mostly have low self-esteem, poor performance in schools and troubled relationships. With age, symptoms of ADHD lessen but some people fail to completely come over their ADHD disorder. However, many strategies can be learnt to become successful.

The risk factors of ADHD include blood relatives, like sibling or a parent, with some mental disorder or ADHD. The exposure to various environmental toxins like lead. It is mainly found in the pipes and paint in old buildings. A big risk factor occurs during pregnancy when the mother smokes, drink alcohol or use drugs. The premature birth is yet another risk factor. It is mostly seen that sugar causes hyperactivity but there is no proof of its direct relation with ADHD. There can be different issues in the childhood which may lead to difficulty in sustaining attention but it is not necessary that every such issue is ADHD.

Complications of ADHD
There are many difficulties/complications which ADHD disorder brings, especially to children.  The children suffering from ADHD often struggle to perform in school which further leads to academic failures and judgement by adults and other kids. In comparison to children without ADHD, the children with ADHD are more prone to all types of injuries and accidents. Such kids have poor self-esteem and they often face troubles to interact and get accepted by adults and peers. These children are always at a higher risk of drug and alcohol abuse, or any law-breaking behavior.

Diagnosis of ADHD
ADHD is precisely diagnosed during childhood and no lab tests are required at that time to confirm the disorder. A physical examination of the child is conducted and this examination includes child psychologists, psychiatrists, behavioral/developmental pediatricians, clinical social workers and behavioral neurologists. After thoroughly examining all the possible child’s behavior reasons, the specialist will check the medical and school records of the child and talk to the parents and teachers who have filled the child’s behavior rating scale. After considering all this information, the diagnosis is made.
