Acromegaly

What is Acromegaly
Acromegaly is a chronic metabolic disorder that develops when the pituitary gland produces excess growth hormone levels. In most cases, it is the result of a tumor developing within the gland. This can cause the patient’s hands, feet and other body parts to enlarge.

Symptoms of Acromegaly
The symptoms of acromegaly include an abnormal growth of the hands and feet, noticeable gaps between the teeth, experiencing trouble breathing while sleeping, rough and oily skin, feeling uncommon fatigue and weakness, heavy sweating, painful headaches, impaired vision and changes in facial features.

Causes of Acromegaly
Excess production of the growth hormone, endocrine disorders and pituitary and non-pituitary tumors can cause acromegaly.

Risk factors of Acromegaly
Certain factors can trigger and aggravate the development of acromegaly. These risk factors include hereditary factors, having a past history of a pituitary tumor, lung neoplasms, adrenal tumor and a tumor of the pancreas.

Complications of Acromegaly
If left untreated or allowed to worsen, this disorder can develop certain complications. These include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, loss in vision and arthritis.

Diagnosis of Acromegaly
Although it is not unusual for doctors to miss signs of acromegaly on the first visit, there are certain distinctive signs of acromegaly, which if caught in time, can assist your doctor in identifying your issue. Diagnosis of acromegaly includes blood tests and measurement of growth hormone in the blood. More accurate results can be determined through testing levels of growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in the blood or glucose tolerance tests. In addition, imaging analysis through computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the brain can help your doctor look for tumors of the pancreas, adrenal glands, or ovaries, or even detect lung cancer that could be secreting the growth hormone.

Precautions and Prevention of acromegaly
There is no specific method to prevent acromegaly. Early detection is the best hope of preventing severe symptoms and complications. Maintaining a proper diet and taking care of the needs of the pituitary gland are also important recommendations. For example, it is helpful to know that the pituitary needs manganese, vitamins E, A, D and B to function effectively.
If you have had some sort of surgical or non-invasive procedure done to treat an endocrine issue, you have to be monitored regularly for some time after the procedure to make sure that the therapy has worked and is not having any side effects. Regular checkups are a good precaution to take in order to avoid re-igniting the issue.

If the disease has caused a change in your lifestyle and physical appearance, you may be experiencing feelings of social anxiety and isolation. In these cases, it is helpful and reassuring to join a support group, attend counseling sessions and talk to close friends and family members who may be able to support you during this time.

Treatment of Acromegaly
These include homeopathic treatment of acromegaly, acupuncture and acupressure, treatment of acromegaly through conventional or allopathic means, surgical procedures, dietary and herbal treatments, and others.

Homeopathic Treatment of Acromegaly
Homeopathy is widely considered to be a safe and natural treatment of endocrinal disorders that contribute to acromegaly. The homeopathic medicines are selected after a full individualized examination and case-analysis, which includes the medical history of the patient, lifestyle study, and a testing of their physical and mental constitution. Some of the remedies for treatment of acromegaly are thyroidinum, chrysarobinum, baryta carb, carcinocin and pitutrinum.

Conventional or Allopathic Treatments of Acromegaly
Medical treatments include drug therapy, and radiation therapy. Allopathic drugs and injections offer prompt relief in the symptoms of acromegaly and reduce the excess secretion of growth hormone, which is the purpose of treatment—to prevent or minimize damage to the rest of the pituitary gland and surrounding brain tissue by reducing GH and IGF-I levels.

Drug therapy includes treatment through dopamine agonists, somatostatin analogs or growth hormone receptor antagonists, and the effectiveness of the drugs depends on the severity of your condition. However, side effects of these drugs can include gastrointestinal issues, nausea, light-headedness when standing up, and nasal congestion.

In case surgery and drug therapy do not work or the patient is unable to undergo either for any medical reason, radiation therapy can be used. This process is slower and gradual as it involves focusing radiation at the location of the tumor over a period of time depending on the size of the issue. Radiation therapy can lead to reduction in tumor size and GH release levels.

Surgical Treatment of Acromegaly
Surgery is a fast and often successful treatment, and a surgical procedure to remove the pituitary tumor tends to give the best results in the shortest time. The surgeon reaches the pituitary through an incision in the nose and, with special tools, removes the tumor tissue. This procedure called trans-sphenoidal surgery. This procedure relieves the pressure on the surrounding brain regions and can lower GH levels. The surgical option can produce results in a few days, and soft tissue in the facial region may begin to seem more normal.

Dietary & Herbal Treatment of Acromegaly
To heal and maintain the health of the pituitary gland (which has been impacted by to growth hormone levels), nutritional supplements along with regular exercise can be very beneficial. L-arginine, glutamine and glycine are examples of supplements that can help with this. Herbal remedies that include hawthorn berries, horny goat weed, and maca have also known to be beneficial. In additional, licorice tea is an herbal remedy that balances the adrenal system that includes the pituitary gland. Chaste tree berry also regulates hormones and supports the function of the pituitary gland.
