Abdomen Colic

What is Abdominal Colic
Abdominal colic is a pain that develops between the upper part of the stomach and the groin. About three weeks after the birth of the baby the pain develops. Given that this pain can cause severe abdominal pain and discomfort to the baby, causing the baby to scream continuously, it’s not dangerous to the baby’s health. Colic is caused by stomach distension, inflammation or obstruction, and the pain usually persists for up to between 3 and 4 months after the birth of the baby.

Causes of colic
Many possible reasons have been advanced by experts as to the true cause of abdominal colic. However, all reasons have been speculative. Some experts say it might be wind or indigestion, others wonder whether the baby’s stomach is too tender for some substances found in breast milk or simply too sensitive to some baby formulas. Be that as it may, it’s to be remembered that those people who are allergic to milk and those who suffer lactose intolerance also suffer the same symptoms as abdominal colic. There’s no morsel of evidence backing these assertions. Studies show that babies born of mothers who smoked during pregnancy are more prone to have abdominal colic. Colic is more infrequent with the first three born babies, and formula-fed and breastfed babies equally have colic.
Specifically, inflammation, stress, strangulation, indigestion, food poisoning, kidney disorder, liver disorder, constipation, and obstruction are possible causes.

There should be MRI of the abdomen to help detect abnormal tumors.
Also there should be ultrasound for the examination of kidney stone, gall bladder stone, or to check for ectopic pregnancy.

Precautions and Prevention of Abdominal Colic

Fried food as much as possible should be refrained from.

Home treatments for colic
There are no cut and dried treatments for colic. As for a baby that has colic it lies on the parent to device the best way to comfort the baby.  Try wrapping up a baby during an episode of crying, say with a blanket. Some babies enjoy this while others don’t. Carry them in your hands and rock them. The baby might just fall asleep. Many babies respond well to this. Make sure the baby is sitting upright while feeding. This will most likely exclude the gulping of air. Feed the baby if they are crying. This may bring relief. Breastfeed the baby.
Suckling mothers should try to minimize their intake of alcohol, spicy foods, and coffee. You’ll notice that when you do this the colic indications of the baby lowers remarkably.

Evidence exists that an increase in hypoallergenic diets of suckling mothers improves the conditions of the babies. Hypoallergenic diets are those foods that do not contain milk, eggs, nuts or wheat.
Give your baby a pacifier. This may help in keeping the baby temporarily busy. However, the holes in the nipples shouldn’t be too small as to cause the baby to suck in too much air.

Medical treatment for colic
Colic is not abnormal. It’s a normal part of the life of a born child. Generally, it’s not recommended to prescribe medication. However, you can have your doctor advise you in case you’re worried the crying is getting abnormal.

There’s no one-stop cure for cases of colic.
In any case, some treatments have been known to give some babies some relief.
Formulas that exclude protein found in cow’s milk.
The baby will be bottle-fed hypoallergenic formula or the mother who breastfeeds the baby maintains a feeding routine of hypoallergenic diet.
This is just for a temporary period of time. This does not show your baby is intolerant of milk if it works. It just proves a maturing baby. The baby will still outgrow colic at the right time.

Give the baby Simeticone drops
It’s for the relief of abdominal pain such as gripe and colic and expels wind from the gut.
Normally, after each feed, a baby should be given a spoonful of 2.5ml, which can be introduced into the baby’s bottle, or into the mouth of the baby directly.

Give the baby Lactase drops
Milk sugar called lactose is usually broken down into galactose and glucose before they can be used by the body. Lactase is an enzyme that does this work. If the body lacks this enzyme the stomach can develop cramp resulting in diarrhea after a dairy product has been consumed. Lactase enzyme prevents this occurrence. Sometimes, these drops help improve the baby’s colic. But the fact that it works for the baby does not mean that the baby will ever need it in the future. All these are just temporary precautions.
