Absence Seizure

What is absence seizure?
This is a condition that causes an abrupt black-out of the mind that can last for a few minutes when the person becomes unconscious. It may seem like a pause to an observer since it doesn’t last long. It may go unnoticed for a long time while being assumed to be a daydream. The seizure only affects a person in that particular instance after which the senses continue working normally. Absence seizure commonly affects children between the age of 4 to 15 years though it may extend to teenage years, it is uncommon to adults.

What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of absence seizure are, staring at one point, looking empty in the mind, not responding when you talk to him, rapid eye blinking and smacking of the lips. The person may regain conscious after few seconds and may have no clue of what has been going on during the seizure. The frequency of it happening in a day varies from one person to the other. Some it occurs several times a day while others it may go days without it occurring.
Causes of absence seizure
Absence seizure is believed to be a heredity disorder that can be inherited. It is important to study the family history of the affected person in order to be able to start treatments early enough. Absence seizure can also be caused by abnormal electric activities on the nerves in the brain. If anything abnormal affects the normal functioning of the brain for example brain injury, stroke or even diabetes, it may cause absence seizure to develop in a person. Lastly, another thing that may cause this disorder is underlying disorders of the brain like cerebral palsy which can develop to absence seizure in a child.
Diagnosis of absence seizure
The first diagnosis of absence seizure is studying the family history of the person to ascertain whether the cause is heredity or it is caused by other problems. This is usually the first step so that in case the cause is hereditary, the treatment is started as soon as possible which can save a lot of procedures to be carried on. This is then followed by a detailed description of the behavior of the affected person by the people close to the child, could be teachers, parents or guardians. This can tell the doctor a rough idea of the extent to which the child has been affected. Lastly, doctors may perform, ultrasound scanning, X-rays or MRI to the child’s brain as well as the blood tests. This will reveal the underlying cause in the brain.
Precautions and prevention of absence seizure
If you suspect your child could be having absence seizure, it is advisable to see the doctor as soon as possible to prevent it from advancing. Since the symptom can be confused to daydreaming it is advisable as a parent to take a keen observation of how often the situation is occurring and have the child checked by the doctor for any possibility of absence seizure. Prevention is better than cure; therefore it is better to have the last word from the doctor. If the condition remains untreated for long it may cause a child to drag behind in school, have social problems and even tend to misbehave more often than before. It is important to differentiate between daydreaming and absence seizure. Daydreaming occurs when a child is bored and occurs slowly, while absence seizure can occur anytime even between activities and occurs very abrupt. The frequency of absence seizure may be reduced by making the child have frequent, comfortable and enough sleep during the day. Also during showering, it is encouraged to start sprinkling water from the legs in order to adjust the body temperature uniformly. It is not advisable for the affected person to shower in a bath tabs to reduce risks of drowning if it happens during showering. Children who have absence seizure should be treated for fever as soon as possible to prevent the rise in temperature which can affect the brain.
Risks of not Treating Absence seizure
If absence seizure remains untreated for long, it may cause epilepsy which is a more severe disorder than absence seizure. An epileptic person has more risk of injuring themselves or causing deaths than cases of absence seizure. An epileptic person can fall unconscious anywhere even on the road and can happen very fast that they do not have time to alert anyone. Treating epilepsy is quite difficult and expensive compared to absence seizure. An epileptic person cannot live a normal life due to risks of seizures occurring and taking for a long time to regain consciousness. Sometimes it may take an hour for the person to regain consciousness. Some even urinate on themselves during that time which makes them lead a difficult life.
Treatment of absence seizure
There are several methods of treating absence seizure; Homeopathic treatment which takes an approach of calming the nerves systems, it naturally cures the root cause of the disease by focusing on the pathological condition of a person, secondly the Acupuncture and Acupressure treatments which focuses on reducing the severity and frequency of the seizures by the use of sterile needles which are inserted in strategic places influencing the brain energy, thirdly, dietary treatment which focuses on the use of the right diet and herbal medicines for treatments, lastly, the conventional way which is the admission of seizure drugs to the patient.
Absence seizure is mainly treated by prescribing seizure medicines also known as anti-seizure drugs which are used to prevent, control and treat the condition. Testing is done as described above to ascertain the type of seizure a person has so as to prescribe the right medicine. With the continuous use of seizure medicine as prescribed by the physician, the child may outdo the use of these medications by the age of 18 years from which the condition should have been treated completely. It is advisable to never stop taking the medicines or change them without the advice of the doctor as doing this may result in severe seizure. However, if there is no change within one year of use, or the seizures become severe it is advisable to consult a specialist as this is not normal.
