Adhesive Capsulitis

What is Adhesive Capsulitis?
Adhesive capsulitis is a term used to describe frozen shoulder syndrome which is characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder. A frozen shoulder is a condition characterized by notable restriction of active and passive shoulder movements and it occurs in the absence of intrinsic shoulder disorder.

Sign and symptoms of Adhesive Capsulitis
If you are suffering from Adhesive Capsulitis, you will suffer dull pain initially which progresses in intensity leading to the gradual loss of the active and passive movement of the shoulders. You will have increased difficulties in performing even easy tasks like grooming, above your head activities, dressing or even fastening items behind you. Symptoms could develop as early as six months to eleven years.

The major symptoms that will be noted if you have this disease include;
The acute freezing or the painful state which begins with a sharp shoulder pain when you move it continuously while working, or even when you are sleeping. Then comes the frozen or stiffened state where the pain reduces but leads to slow but gradual loss of motion. You will only feel pain when you engage in extreme movements like lifting heavy things. Lastly, the thawing stage where there is the spontaneous improvement in functionality and range of motion.

Cause of Adhesive Capsulitis
The shoulder which consists of the humerus the collarbone and the shoulder blade has a ball and socket joint into which the upper arm head fits. The shoulder capsule which surrounds this joint has synovial fluid which prevents fiction during shoulder movement. Autoimmune conditions of the body may also be causes of this disease.

Formation of scar tissue in the shoulder causes frozen shoulder which leads to thickening and tightening of the shoulder joint’s capsule. This limits the movement of the shoulder thus stiffness and pain are felt in any movement attempt. Though the exact cause cannot be pinpointed, recent injuries and fractures are common causes of adhesive capsulitis.

Risk factors associated with Adhesive Capsulitis.
Factors that may put you at risk of contracting adhesive capsulitis include the following;
Age and gender. Being a woman aged forty years and above raises chances for you getting the disease. Recent trauma to the shoulder in the form of an injury, fracture or even surgery could cause immobility during recovery and stiffness of the shoulder capsule. If you also suffer from diabetes, your chances of developing adhesive capsulitis are increased. Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism and stroke also raise chances of getting adhesive capsulitis. This is in addition to Parkinson’s disease and cardiovascular diseases.

Diagnosis and prognosis of Adhesive Capsulitis
Te main prognosis and diagnosis method used by doctors is the use and review of signs and symptoms shown. The focus will be mostly on the shoulder joints and the arms. To establish how severe the frozen shoulder is, you will be pressed on the shoulder while the doctors moves certain parts of the arm. Some of the problems require image tests such as x-ray since it’s the only way to identify them. Your medical history may come in handy at this juncture as it may help identify the cause of adhesive capsulitis.

Prevention of Adhesive Capsulitis
The only time that the prevention of this disease can be possible is in an instance where it is caused by an injury that makes moving the shoulder difficult. If in case you experience such an injury, it is important to talk to your physician for advice on what exercises may help improve the shoulder blade movement. Your doctor or physician is best suited to give you the best recommendation based on how severe your sign and symptoms from diagnosis are.

Treatment of Adhesive Capsulitis
The main objective of offering treatment is to relieve you from pain and discomfort caused by adhesive capsulitis. As much as treatment is administered, recuperation maybe slow and the disease may take longer to completely go away. The use of painkillers to alleviate the mild pain is the most common method of treatment. Most of these painkillers e.g. ibuprofen and paracetamol are readily available over the counter. You should know that not all painkillers are suitable for all patients and it is, therefore, important to consult a doctor before you decide to use them.

For reduction of pain, the use of compression packs either hot or cold is recommended. They should be used in alternation. You may also be injected with corticosteroid injections which are mainly for reduction of pain and swelling. It should be injected directly into your shoulder blade.

Physical therapy is one of the best treatments for this disorder. Training in movement exercise activities aid in maintaining as much mobility and flexibility without strain and less pain is experienced. This method goes hand in hand with shoulder manipulation where your joint will be moved gently while you are under anesthetic for reduction of pain. Regular exercise will take you miles in the stages of recovery. The towel and pendulum stretches are some of the exercises you may engage in.

Surgery of the shoulder referred to as shoulder arthroscopy is used in some cases. The process involves insertion of a miniature tube through an incision made on the shoulder joint in order to remove scar tissues and adhesions that may be lodged in your shoulder blade. The stimulation of nerves medically known as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is used in some cases. It helps in numbing the spinal cord nerve endings which are responsible for pain control.

Homeopathic treatment is used in the aid of reducing and relief from pain that comes with adhesive capsulitis. It is generally used to improve general cell physiology and tissue health.
Acupuncture treatment of adhesive capsulitis is through the insertion of very fine needles into your body from different points on your body for fifteen to forty minutes. In this period of time, the needles may be moved or manipulated. Though the needles may be moved and disturbed, you will feel very little or no pain at all since the needles are very thin and flexible
