Adenoids

What are Adenoids?
The adenoids are a patch of tissue at the back of the nose above the tonsils. They help protect the body from diseases and help to protect kids from getting sick. They are located near the entrance to the breathing passages where they can catch incoming infections. When adenoids become enlarged due to infection or inflammation, the condition is called adenoiditis.

Symptoms of Adenoids
Signs and symptoms of enlarged or swollen adenoids include increased nasal secretions, bad breath, pus coming from the nose, cracked lip, dry mouth, sore feeling in the back of the throat, frequent ear infections, mouth breathing, having to keep your mouth open during day, having difficulty sleeping or restlessness while sleeping and having difficulty swallowing.

Causes of Adenoids
Adenoiditis or swollen adenoids can be caused by viral and bacterial infections, and allergies. Enlargement of the adenoids may also occur naturally when the baby grows in the womb. Long-term inflammation or long-lasting infection can also cause adenoids.

Risk factors of Adenoids
Certain factors may lead to the enlargement of adenoids, including weight gain after surgery, ongoing exposure to bacterial or viral infection, childhood, and recurring infections.

Complications of Adenoids
A number of complications can arise from the enlargement or infection of your adenoids. These include ear and chest infections, blockage of the ears, sinus problems and other issues. In some case, the adenoid “bed” usually becomes infected, and can cause noticeably bad breath that can last for up to 10 days. In addition, velopharyngeal insufficiency may also develop, which means that sounds or liquids can escape up the back of the nose—impacting speech or swallowing motions. There is also an anesthetic risk when surgery for the removal of adenoids is conducted, which is usually related to the health of the patient.

Diagnosis of Adenoids
An ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor is specialized to diagnose you with adenoiditis. The physical examination will also include a study of your symptoms. The doctor may also conduct throat examinations to obtain samples of bacteria and other organisms, blood tests and imaging tests such as X-rays of the head and neck to check for the severity of the adenoids. An assessment of the nasopharynx, flexible nasopharyngoscopy, may take place. A sleep study may also help define the severity of any sleep disturbance due to chronic obstruction

Precautions and Prevention of Adenoids
Drinking a lot of fluids and avoiding junk foods can help prevent adenoiditis. It is also recommended to avoid people who smoke, get plenty of sleep and maintaining good hygiene. Removing the adenoids through surgery prevents long-term blockage. Treating throat infections early can also help to prevent the situation from worsening. In cases of adenoid infection in children, it is important to seek help from a pediatrician immediately to prevent further complications.

Treatment of Adenoids
Treatments for adenoids that have become inflamed or enlarged due to infection include homeopathic treatments, acupuncture and acupressure treatments, conventional or allopathic treatments through medication, surgical procedures, dietary and herbal treatments, and others.

Homeopathic Treatment of Adenoids
Homeopathy can be effective in getting rid of the swelling of the adenoids and soothe the patient’s pain. The duration of homeopathic treatment depends on the size of the adenoids as well as the duration of the condition. Homeopathic remedies can be targeted at symptoms ranging from mouth breathing to sleeping difficulties, which are common during adenoiditis. The treatment is based on the individual’s condition and case. Homeopathic treatments used for this issue include Calcarea phosphorica, tuberculinum, agraphis nutans, baryta carbonica and bacillinum. Thuja and sanguinaria can also be used for discharge and blockage.

Treatment of Adenoids through Acupuncture and Acupressure
Acupressure and acupuncture brings energy to the area, and reduces the amount of mucus in the nose. In children, the adenoids often become so swollen that the child has to become a mouth breather. This is because the nasal cavity becomes so reduced that it is easily blocked and becomes full of mucus. Treatment is done by applying pressure on certain pressure points that can relieve discomfort, including the palm and sole.

Conventional or Allopathic Treatment of Adenoids
Inflamed adenoidal tissue can be treated with a course of antibiotics. For viral antibiotics, your doctor can devise a treatment plan based on the virus. In cases where antibiotics or other options do not work or the patient is unable to undergo that treatment, the doctor can consider removing the adenoids in an operation called adenoidectomy, because antibiotics only provide temporary relief and are not prescribed for long-term treatment.

Surgical Treatment of Adenoids
Adenoid removal surgery takes out the adenoid glands. This procedure is also called an adenoidectomy, and can be done without causing harm to the body as your body has other coping mechanisms in cases of infection. In case the patient is a child, they will be given general anesthesia before surgery. The surgeon will insert a small instrument into your child’s mouth to prop it open. Then he will remove the adenoid glands with a curette, a spoon-shaped medical device. Some surgeons may seal the tissue using a heated device instead of removing them. The straightforward surgery does not usually have any complications and can be performed on children aged one to seven years.

Dietary and Herbal Treatment of Adenoids
Natural remedies for enlarged adenoids can involve the use of garlic, which has proven to be very useful in treatment of adenoids due to its anti-inflammatory characteristics. Lemon or lime juice in warm water with honey and ginger can be very soothing for the symptoms of infected adenoids. For the treatment, vitamin C intake should be high as well. Other ingredients and substances that can help include cod liver oil, Echinacea, honey and turmeric powder. Herbs like basil, licorice, and pippali are also considered beneficial. Your diet should include clear soups, broth, green tea, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Avoid foods that are oily, fried, overly processed or acidic.

Other Treatments for Adenoids
Breathing exercises can be helpful to regulate the system, especially for children. Breathing in fresh air through the nose should be encouraged. These exercises may help to prevent or cure nasal obstruction and mouth breathing in some cases.
