Autoimmune Disorders

What are Auto Immune Disorders?
Your body has a system to protect itself against diseases and infections, known as the immune system. However, if you get an autoimmune disease, this system can become dysfunctional and start attacking the body’s healthy cells instead. It is a malfunction of the body’s immune system that causes the body to attack its own tissues. Sometimes the immune system stops recognizingwhat needs to be attacked and will create autoantibodies that attack its own cells, tissues or organs. This causes inflammation and damage and it leads to autoimmune disorders.

Autoimmune diseases can affect many parts of the body. Sometimes they can target one organ in the body, and sometimes they attack the entire body. They can be quite serious, and are a major cause of death among women.

Some common autoimmune disorders include Addison disease, Celiac disease, Dermatomyositis, Graves’ disease, Hashimoto thyroiditis, Multiple sclerosis, Myasthenia gravis, Pernicious anaemia, Reactive arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren syndrome, Systemic lupus erythematosus and Type I diabetes.

Symptoms of Auto Immune Disorders
Signs and symptoms of autoimmune disorders include fever, fatigue, aching muscles, swelling and redness, having trouble concentrating, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, hair loss and skin rashes. In addition, high levels of tenderness and sensitivity, joint pain, muscle pain, tender points or all-over pain, changes in weight, exhaustion, anxiety and digestive or gastric problems are also known to be symptoms of early stages of autoimmune disorders.

Causes of Auto Immune Disorders
Autoimmune disorders can be caused by genetics and environmental factors such as toxins. Other causes include stress and anxiety, pregnancy, infections, consuming too much alcohol or tobacco abuse, Iodine, Lack of sleep and insufficient physical activity.

Risk factors of Auto Immune Disorders
Certain people are more likely to get an autoimmune disorder, such as women more than men, women of childbearing age, people with a family history of diseases such as lupus and multiple sclerosis, different members of a single family, people of certain races or ethnic backgrounds and people who get exposed to chemicals and solvents. Age is also a factor, since most autoimmune disorders affect younger and middle-aged people.

Complications of Auto Immune Disorders
Certain complications can arise from the presence of autoimmune disorders, and these depend on the specific disease in question. They can include Thyroid and Skin damage. In addition, complications can also arise from the medicines being used to counter the attacks of the body’s immunity.

Diagnosis of Auto Immune Disorders
Doctor will take a complete medical history, perform a physical examination, and may order blood tests, radiological studies, and other studies. Tests include antinuclear antibody tests, Autoantibody tests, CBC, Comprehensive metabolic panel, C-reactive protein (CRP), Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and urinalysis. Other tests include(for rheumatoid arthritis) the rheumatoid factor test, for (myasthenia gravis), the acetylcholine receptor antibody test and for thyroid disorders, thyroid function tests.
