Asbestosis is a medical condition which is characterized by
the scarring of lung tissue caused by the asbestos fiber. Asbestos is a
naturally occurring mineral product in the body which has been found to be
resistant to heat and corrosion. Asbestos has also been extensively used in the
past as an insulation material and fire-retardant material. Other uses of
asbestos include use in cement production and in the production of some vinyl
floor tiles.
Symptoms of Asbestosis
The scarring of the lungs tissue by asbestos has been found
to present itself with some medically agreeable symptoms most of which are
related to breathing in the affected individuals. It has been established that
persons suffering from this medical condition present some or all of the following
symptoms depending on the severity or mildness of the medical condition. Some
of the clinically relatable symptoms of asbestosis include shortness of breath
in affected individuals, incidence of chest pain accompanied with coughing,
deformity in the finger and most importantly emaciation which is caused by loss
of appetite in the affected person.
Causes of Asbestosis
A number of factors have been implicated in the possible
cause of asbestosis, some of these factors however has to do with occupational
hazards, closeness or proximity to industrial areas, lifestyle choices and
others. However, the most clinically recognized cause of Asbestosis has been
associated with continued exposure to high levels of asbestos dust over a long
period of time.
Risk factors of Asbestosis
Asbestosis presents some risk factors in humans especially
persons with compromised immune systems. The medical condition is mostly linked
to risk factors which include persons who work for constriction companies.
Other risk factors which can predispose persons to the incidence of asbestosis
which will cause scarring of the lung tissue by asbestos include workers in the
construction, shipbuilding, automotive, and railroad industries, also families
of workers in the road construction, railroad, building, shipbuilding and
automotive industry are predisposed to the risk of this medical condition.
Persons who also favor cigarette smoking or passive smokers are also liable to
develop this medical condition.
Complications of Asbestosis
There are a number of complications which have been
established to pertain to asbestosis as a medical condition. The complications
presented by this medical condition may however be mild or severe depending on
the level of exposure, chronic degree of the medical condition, immune system
of the affected person and also the dietary intake. Some of the recognized
complications presented by the medical condition include; possibility of
developing Lung cancer and a possibility of Laryngeal cancer. Other
complications associated with asbestosis include partial failure of the heart
(the right side) and blue coloration on the lips and fingers of affected
persons.
Diagnosis of Asbestosis
Asbestosis generally presents itself with symptoms which
appear to be similar to some mild breathing related problems, however, persons
who have experienced one of the following symptoms including shortness of
breath, chest pain accompanied with coughing, possible deformity in the finger
should proceed to a qualified medical station for proper diagnosis of the
medical condition. Some of the widely available diagnostic procedures include
the conduct of Chest X-ray, CT scan, and Pulmonary function tests.
Precautions & Prevention of Asbestosis
Asbestosis has been established to be caused by continued or
extended exposure to a mineral known as asbestos which is resistant to heat and
corrosion. The mineral once it gains access into the lungs causes scarring of
the lung tissues in affected persons. However, the respiratory medical
condition which is most common to persons working in the industrial sector such
as in the shipbuilding, building, road construction and other related sectors
can be prevented through some basic precautionary moves which include wearing
of a protective mask with a supply of clean air, reduction in the level of
exposure to asbestos, avoidance of active or passive smoking as smokers have
also been implicated to be at risk of this medical condition.
Treatment of Asbestosis
There are several treatment procedures which may be applied in
the rehabilitation of persons suffering from this respiratory tract related
condition. Persons suffering from Asbestosis may adopt one or a combination of
the following treatment procedures for faster results. Treatment procedures
recognized for asbestosis include; Homeopathic Treatment of Asbestosis;
Acupuncture and Acupressure Treatment of Asbestosis; Psychotherapy Treatment of
Asbestosis; Conventional or Allopathic Treatment of Asbestosis; Surgical
Treatment of Asbestosis; Dietary and Herbal Treatment of Asbestosis; and Other
Treatment of Asbestosis.
Homeopathic Treatment of Asbestosis
Homeopathic treatment of asbestosis involves the use of
medications which are administered in small doses to the patient suffering from
this medical condition. The administered medications are aimed at relieving the
symptoms presented by the medical condition and also have been found to present
identical symptoms to the condition they are meant to treat. The medications
administered in homeopathic treatment have also been found to contain small
volumes of substances which exhibit similar effects to asbestos exposure, and
thus, leading to the healing of the body. Some of the common homeopathic
medicines used in the cure of asbestosis are: Ant T, Calc, Silicea, Mang, and Tub.
Acupuncture & Acupressure Treatment of Asbestosis
Patients suffering from asbestosis as a medical condition
have been reported to respond positively to the use of acupuncture as a
treatment method. The use of acupuncture aims at relieving some of the symptoms
presented by the medical condition including pain, stress, and anxiety. Several
patients living and suffering from asbestosis and related symptoms have been
reported to have been rehabilitated through the use of acupuncture treatment of
the medical condition. Acupuncture also aims at reducing pain, anxiety and
stress attached to the medical condition, and also helps improve breathing in
the affected patient by countering the short breaths presented as a symptom of
the medical condition. In the actual treatment of asbestosis, very thin,
sterilized needles are inserted into each pressure point, when all needles are
inserted into the pressure point, patient is allowed to rest for a while before
the needles are removed.
Conventional / Allopathic Treatment of Asbestosis
This involves the use of medications in the treatment of
this medical condition, however, it is important to note that there are no
medications that are used to treat asbestosis. Such medications which may be
administered to persons living with asbestosis include anti-hypertensive
medications which is aimed at reducing the incidence of high blood pressure in
the lungs from the condition also, Blood thinning medications may be
administered to prevent blood clots from forming in the lungs of the affected
individual. Blood clots may obstruct the flow of blood in the vessels of the
lung.
Surgical Treatment of Asbestosis
Biopsy is mostly conducted in the surgical treatment of
asbestosis as a medical condition.
