What is Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis is a medical condition which presents itself
in diverse forms, mostly related to the buildup of fats and cholesterol in the
body. Atherosclerosis involves the build up of fats and cholesterol in and on
the walls of the artery. The buildup of fats and cholesterol on the walls are
often referred to as plaques which can restrict the otherwise easy movement of
blood along and through the vessels. Atherosclerosis has medically been
reported to be one of the causative agents of heart attacks in affected
persons, other medical conditions presented by Atherosclerosis includes strokes
and peripheral vascular disease which are all classified under the
“cardiovascular disease.”
Symptoms of Atherosclerosis
There are some symptoms which have medically been
established to be characteristic of atherosclerosis, these medically recognized
symptoms however present themselves in a wide range of arrays as some are mild
while other symptoms may be severe. Some of the recognizable symptoms of
atherosclerosis includes; chest pain or pressure around the chest, some other
persons suffering from this medical condition have been reported to have
incidence of weakness and tightness around the chest. Other symptoms
characteristic of this medical condition include weakness in the arms or legs,
possible incidence of high blood pressure and kidney failure has also been
reported. Additionally, persons with atherosclerosis may exhibit symptoms which
include difficulty in speaking or slurred speech and erectile dysfunction in men.
Causes of Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis has been established to be a medical
condition which has been associated with the buildup of fats and cholesterol in
the body. It has been reported that the excess fats and cholesterol in the body
clog the lining of the arteries and veins thereby causing the heart to pump
blood with increased pressure. Some of the causes of this medical condition
which may lead to heart failure, kidney failure and other severe manifestations
has been revealed to include; High blood pressure, high cholesterol and fat
content intake and content in the body, smoking and Diabetes.
Risk factors of Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis has been established to be caused by the
continued build up of fats and cholesterol in the body, however, there are some
conditions which may predispose a person to the risk of falling victim to this
medical condition, some of the risk factors which have been medically
identified and associated with atherosclerosis include a family history of
early heart disease, incidence of high blood pressure and high cholesterol
content in the body, Diabetes, Obesity, and smoking.
Complications of Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis has been reported to present along with it a
number of complications which may be mild or severe depending on the level of
fat and cholesterol build up in and on the veins and arteries. Atherosclerosis
as a medical condition has been established to present some symptoms which
include possible erectile dysfunction in males as well as kidney related problems.
Complications which have also been revealed to be associated with the medical
condition in affected persons include the incidence of coronary artery disease,
possible manifestation of Peripheral artery disease, possibility that the
patient suffering from Atherosclerosis may also suffer from Carotid artery
disease. Another complication which has been associated with the medical
condition is Aneurysms.
Diagnosis of Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis can be diagnosed by a number of methods;
however, the first line of diagnosis is in the affected person who starts to
feel the manifestation of the symptoms associated with this medical condition.
Further tests may however be conducted in ascertaining the medical condition,
some of the tests conducted to establish atherosclerosis as a medical condition
include; Physical examination conducted by a qualified medical practitioner,
Blood tests, Doppler ultrasound, Ankle-brachial index, Electrocardiogram (ECG),
Stress test, Cardiac catheterization and angiogram, CT scan and MRA (magnetic
resonance angiography).
Precautions & Prevention of Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis as a medical condition is presented due to
the lifestyle of the affected person and also may be as a result of some
genetic factors, however, there are some precautionary moves to be adopted in
guiding against the incidence of the medical condition, such precautions to be
adopted include changes in lifestyle choices including avoiding smoking
actively and passively, proper exercise, maintenance of a healthy weight,
consumption of good and healthy food.
Treatment of Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis, a medical condition which has been fingered
as one of the main causes of cardiac related failures, generally,
cardiovascular disease, can be treated using a number of methods which have
been proven to be effective in the proper management of the medical condition,
however, most of the treatment methods adopted is affected mainly by the
lifestyle choices made by the affected persons. Some of the treatment procedures
which can be adopted in the proper care and possible cure of Atherosclerosis
include;
Homeopathic Treatment of Atherosclerosis
Homeopathic treatment of Atherosclerosis has been reported
to be focused mainly on the prevention of formation or further formation of
atherosclerotic plaques in and on the arteries and veins and also to assists in
lowering high blood cholesterol level. Homeopathic treatment has also been
revealed to be majorly focused on reduction of plaque build-up and through the
use of some remedies for the treatment of atherosclerosis. Some of the remedies
employed in homeopathic treatment of atherosclerosis include: Baryta carbonica,
Olea europaea, Cactus grandifloras, Crataegus oxyacantha, and Lycopodium.
Conventional or Allopathic Treatment of Atherosclerosis
In conventional or Allopathic treatment of Atherosclerosis,
some of the following medications have been reported to be administered by
qualified medical practitioners to remedy the condition, some of the
medications include: Cholesterol medications, Anti-platelet medications,
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, Beta blocker medications,
Calcium channel blockers, Water pills (diuretics)
Surgical Treatment of Atherosclerosis
The surgical treatment of atherosclerosis is most often not
an option until the severe stages of the medical condition which presents heavy
buildup of atherosclerosis plaques in and around the arteries and veins. Some
of the procedures involved include: Angioplasty and stent placement, Bypass
surgery, Endarterectomy, and Thrombolytic therapy.
Dietary and Herbal Treatment of Atherosclerosis
In dietary treatment of atherosclerosis, affected persons
are advised to eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains with proper care to
consume diet which is low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. Also,
