Appendicitis

 What is appendicitis
Appendix is a pouch in the shape of a finger and it is projected from the colon towards the lower right side of the abdomen. And, Appendicitis is a condition of appendix’s inflammation. However, appendix doesn’t have any specific purpose or function.

During appendicitis, pain is caused it the lower part of right abdomen. Most of the people report the beginning of pain around naval and then it moves. When inflammation worsens, the pain of appendicitis increases and finally becomes severe. Appendicitis can be developed in anybody’s body but most often it happens in people who fall in the age group of 10-30. The people beyond this age group are not prone to get appendicitis so frequently. There is one standard treatment and that is removal of appendix through surgical procedure.

Symptoms of Appendicitis
There are various signs and symptom to determine appendicitis and the determination helps to properly treat it. If a person feels that suddenly a pain has started on right side of his/her abdomen, the maximum chances are that this pain is of appendicitis. Similarly, if a pain suddenly starts around the navel and more often shift towards the lower right abdomen, then the chances of an appendicitis can’t be ruled out. If this kind of pain worsens while coughing, walking or making other conflicting movements, the suspicion of appendicitis moves closer towards confirmation of an appendicitis.
Some disturbances in the body also happens during appendicitis. These include vomiting and nausea, lack of appetite, fever of lower grade which gets worse with the growth of illness. During appendicitis, a person might suffer from diarrhea, constipation or abdominal bloating along with the pain.

The site where pain occurs in the abdomen may vary. The reasons may be your age and your appendix’s position. In pregnant women, the pain might look like coming from upper abdomen because during pregnancy, the appendix is placed higher.

Causes of Appendicitis
The cause of appendicitis is a blockage in appendix’s lining and this further causes an infection. During the infection, a rapid multiplication of bacteria aggravates the inflammation and make the appendix swollen and packed with pus.

Complications of Appendicitis
Some serious and life-threatening complications are caused by appendicitis. It may happen that the appendix ruptures. The rupture then spreads the infection all through the abdomen (peritonitis). All this could lead to serious complication and sometimes the situation becomes life-threatening. In such cases, immediately a surgery should be done to get the appendix removed and abdominal cavity cleaned.

Another complication which can occur during appendicitis is the formation of a pus pocket in the abdomen. In case appendix burst, a pocket of pus (abscess) might develop inside the abdomen. In maximum of such cases, the abscess is drained by surgeon with the help of a tube. The surgeon passes the tube through the abdominal wall to abscess. For 2 weeks, the tube is left there and the doctor prescribe antibiotics to clear off the infection. When the infection is cleared, a surgery can be done for appendix removal. Some people get the abscess drained and the appendix removed immediately.

When to visit a doctor?
If you suspect that the symptoms or signs of your child are worrisome, then do not delay in making an appointment with a reputed doctor. If the abdominal pain is severe, then it is time to seek speedy medical attention.

Diagnosis of Appendicitis
To make sure that the case is of appendicitis, doctors examine the patient physically as well as pathologically. Some imagery tests like X-rays are also done to confirm the case. If you are suffering from abdominal pain and you suspect an appendicitis, you should definitely visit a professional medical practitioner. Firstly, your doctor will physically examine you and will ask to get some blood and urine tests done. Then for confirmation, you will be asked to get an abdominal X-ray, an ultrasound or a CT Scan (to get more clear results).

Treatment of Appendicitis

Homeopathic Treatment of Appendicitis
With homeopathic treatment, the inflammation and pain are relieved. To treat appendicitis through homeopathy, there are different medicines. Some of them are Bryonia, Belladonna, Rhustox, Lachesis, and Arsenicum.

Surgical Treatment of Appendicitis
A surgical treatment is the most suitable solution to appendicitis. Two different kinds of surgeries are used to get rid of appendicitis. They are appendectomy and laparoscopic surgery. In appendectomy, an abdominal incision of about 5 to 10 cm long is made. Then the surgeon will insert a video camera and special surgical tools into the abdomen and will finally remove the appendix.

Another way to do it is by making some tiny abdominal incisions. This is the laparoscopic surgery procedure. This surgery allows the fast recovery with less pain. Elderly or obese people benefits the most from it. This surgery seems better but not everyone benefits from it. Some people with ruptured appendix or when the infection spreads beyond appendix along with abscess, then an appendectomy should be done in such cases. This helps the surgeon to clean abdominal cavity.
Drain the abscess before appendix surgery

In case of bursting of an appendix and formation of abscess around it, draining the abscess becomes a mandatory thing. To drain it, a tube can be placed through the skin in abscess. It will take several weeks to control the infection. So, appendectomy should be performed after that time.

Dietary and Herbal Treatment of Appendicitis
You should eat foods with high-fiber and after the surgery drink clear liquids and foods with low-residue.

Alternative Treatment of Appendicitis
To control after appendectomy’s pain, some medicines will be prescribed by the doctor. If some alternative and complementary treatments are used along with the medications, the pain can be controlled. The alternative methods which can be used to get relief from pain are distracting activities and guided imagery.

Distracting activities are the activities which will keep the mind off pain. For example, talking to a friend and listening to music. With children, distraction is most effective. Guided imagery means closing the eyes and thinking about some favorite place.
