Astigmatism


What is Astigmatism
Astigmatism is a medical condition which affects the eyes. This eye condition is characterized with blurry vision and some other sight related manifestations. Astigmatism has been reported to be medically common in persons irrespective of their age, sex or lifestyle choices and has been revealed to be a mild imperfection in the patient’s eye's curvature.

Symptoms of Astigmatism
Astigmatism, a common medical condition which affects the eyes irrespective of the age, sex and lifestyle has been reported to be caused by mild curvature in the eyes. The sight related medical condition is characterized by some symptoms which may present it as either mild or severe. Some of the medically attested symptoms which have been attributed to astigmatism include; blurred or distorted vision at all distances, persons with astigmatism are also sensitive to light and are plagued by headaches, eye strains, and excessive squinting of the eyes.

Causes of Astigmatism
Astigmatism has been reported to be medically caused by some conditions and factors. However, the sight related problem may be present in some persons from birth. In cases where an individual suffering from the medical condition developed the vision related problem, here are some of the medically established caused of the vision related problem; eye injuries or certain types of surgeries conducted around the head region. Additionally, some other factors such as Keratinous, a degenerative disorder of the eye may also be responsible for the incidence of the sight related problem. Other cause of astigmatism includes a high level of sugar in the blood.

Risk factors of Astigmatism
There are some risk factors which has been medically established to predispose persons to the incidence of astigmatism. Such risk factors identified medically include premature birth of babies which may predispose them to incomplete development especially in the eye region and prevalence in babies born with low body weight.

Diagnosis of Astigmatism
There are several diagnostic procedures which may be undertaken in the proper diagnosis of this sight related problem. Asides the expression of some of the symptoms associated with astigmatism which include blurry vision, diagnosis of this medical condition may be conducted under the supervision of a qualified medical doctor. Doctors have been reported to conduct the following tests in ascertaining the presence or absence of astigmatism in a patient. such tests conducted includes; Visual acuity test wherein the doctor asks patients to read letters on a chart, Astigmatic dial which is a chart containing and showing a series of lines which make up a semi-circle. Additionally, tests that can be conducted to ascertain astigmatism include the use of keratometer which measure the reflected light and the Keratoscope test which measures the curvature of the patient’s cornea.

Precautions & Prevention of Astigmatism
There are some basic precautions which may be employed in safeguarding against the incidence of astigmatism, some of these precautions involves the consumption of plenty of fruits and vegetables along with the use of the adequate and prescribed glasses. It is also important to use good lighting when reading and performing tasks in the dark. Persons predisposed to the risk of this medical condition are also advised to have their eyes checked regularly

Treatment of Astigmatism
There are several treatment methods which may be adopted in the treatment of astigmatism which is a sight related problem. These choices aimed at correcting astigmatism include: Photoreactive keratectomy which involves the removal of the outer protective layer of the cornea. Following this removal, an excimer laser is then used to change the curvature of the cornea of the patient. Also, Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, LASIK, may be conducted. This surgical procedure involves the use of a surgical instrument called keratome which is used to make a thin, circular hinged cut into the cornea of the affected person. The surgeon then lifts the flap of the cornea and proceeds to use an excimer laser to sculpt the shape of the cornea under the flap. Additionally, the Laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy, LASEK, may also be conducted which involves folding back a thinner layer of the cornea, a procedure which makes the eye less vulnerable to damage in case of injuries.

Dietary and Herbal Treatment of Astigmatism
Dietary and herbal treatment of astigmatism involves encouraged consumption of plenty of fruits and vegetables along with dark green leafy foods. Also, consumption of food rich in vitamin A is encouraged and avoidance of refined sugars and processed foods is cautioned.
