What is Ataxia
Ataxia has been reported to be a medical condition which is
characterized by a lack of muscle coordination during voluntary movements. The
lack of muscle coordination is most often than not noticeable in cases where
the patients make voluntary movements such as walking or picking up of objects.
Ataxia has been recognized as a brain disease which specifically affects the
cerebellum. However, ataxia has been reported to be manifested in a number of
ways including the Friedreich’s ataxia and spinocerebellar ataxia type 6.
Medically, Ataxia telangiectasia has been established to be more less than
common.
Symptoms of Ataxia
Ataxia as a medical condition which causes loss of
coordination when performing voluntary tasks like movement has been reported to
be particular to the cerebellum in the brain, the medical condition however
presents some symptoms which have been reported to be characteristic of its
incidence, such medically established symptoms include; Poor or loss of
coordination; Less apparent facial expression in affected persons, imbalance
and noticeable instability in gait of the affected person. Also, persons with
this medical condition have been reported to be prone to stumbling when
walking. Additionally, persons suffering from Ataxia exhibit difficulty in
eating, writing or buttoning a shirt with noticeable change in speech patterns.
Other symptoms exhibited by the medical condition include hearing problems,
limited range of eye movements, swallowing difficulty, and general problems
with balance.
Causes of Ataxia
Ataxia, a medical condition which is characterized by a lack
of muscle coordination when performing voluntary movements has been reported to
be caused by some of the following incidents; Head trauma, Stroke, Multiple
sclerosis (MS), Transient ischemic attack (TIA), Toxic reaction, Paraneoplastic
syndromes, Chicken pox, Cerebral palsy.
Diagnosis of Ataxia
Diagnosis of Ataxia as a medical condition can be primarily
noticed when some of the following symptoms are expressed by the affected
patient, difficulty in eating, loss of coordination, possible stumbling when
walking, less apparent facial expression, noticeable instability in gait of the
affected person. However, medical diagnosis of the condition can be conducted
through some examinations which include physical and neurological tests. Some
of the commonly used diagnostic tests in establishing this medical condition
include; Blood tests, Urine tests, CT scan of the brain, MRI of the brain,
Lumbar puncture also known as spinal tap, and Genetic testing.
Precautions & Prevention of Ataxia
Some preventive moves may be employed in curbing the
incident of ataxia as a medical condition. Ataxia has been largely linked to
damages which occur to the cerebellum in the brain which means most of the
basic precautionary moves should be associated with care of the head and the
brain. However, some medically administered precautions in preventing against
Ataxia includes; Prevention of stroke and brain hemorrhaging by controlling
blood pressure, consumption of more copper-rich foods and limited exposure to
poisonous compounds such as mercury, solvents, gasoline, glue and other
poisons.
Treatment of Ataxia
Treatment procedures employed in the care of Ataxia may be
adopted individually or in combination for the best possible result. Some of
the medically available treatment method has been revealed to include;
Homeopathic Treatment of Ataxia; Acupuncture and Acupressure Treatment of
Ataxia; Psychotherapy Treatment of Ataxia; Conventional or Allopathic Treatment
of Ataxia; Surgical Treatment of Ataxia; Dietary and Herbal Treatment of
Ataxia; and Other Treatment of Ataxia.
Homeopathic Treatment of Ataxia
In homeopathic treatment of ataxia, the treatment procedure
employed has been reported to be aimed mostly at strengthening the nervous
system of the affected patient. Also, this treatment procedure has been
revealed to be aimed at strengthening the otherwise weakened nervous system and
also to improve muscle coordination in the affected patient. Homeopathic
treatment of this medical condition also has been found to play an important
role in reducing associated psychological symptoms like stress, depression,
anxiety and irritability which has been attributed to ataxia as a medical
condition. Some of the drugs used in the treatment of ataxia as a medical
condition includes; Nux vomica, Belladonna, Phosphorus, Nitric acid, and
Argentum niritcum
Psychotherapy Treatment of Ataxia
In the psychotherapeutic treatment of ataxia, patients
suffering from this medical condition are most commonly re-oriented. It is
common to find patients suffering from this medical condition to express some
symptoms including frustration and depression, the treatment method however has
been revealed to be tailored towards reducing the expression of these symptoms
which affect physical mobility and coordination. Psychotherapeutic treatment of
ataxia has also been reported to help persons suffering from this medical
condition learn new ways to react to situations and challenge their
preconceptions. Homeopathic treatment has also been found to be of help in
preparing patient’s mindset and also in helping them recognize unhealthy
behaviors and change them.
Conventional or Allopathic Treatment of Ataxia
In conventional or Allopathic treatment of ataxia, improvement
of muscle function is held paramount as this treatment procedure helps patients
suffering from this condition better control their muscles for better voluntary
activities. Conventional or allopathic treatment of ataxia also involves the
prescription of some drugs which are aimed at helping patients better control
their muscle activities, such drugs employed in the treatment of ataxia
include; Clonazepam, Amantadine, Gabapentin and Buspirone. However, some
patients with ataxia telangiectasia are prescribed gamma-globulin injections
which is aimed at boosting the immune system of persons living with the rare
form of ataxia. Ataxia patients who also experience muscle spasm amd
uncontrollable eye movement also have some drugs which could be administered to
limit and suppress these reactions.
Dietary & Herbal Treatment of Ataxia
Dietary treatment of ataxia involves the re-orientation of
the patient’s dietary habit to include the fusion of fresh fruits and green
vegetables. Also, patients with ataxia are encourages to consume more food
which are rich in copper. Medically, it is advisable that persons who have been
diagnosed with ataxia consume gluten free diet.
Surgical Treatment of Ataxia
Medically, surgical correction of ataxia is not recommended
as there are several other treatment procedures which have been reported to be
better at managing the medical condition either when adopted singularly or in
combination.
