What is Ascariasis
Ascariasis is a medical condition characterized by a
roundworm infection. This roundworm infection is most common in areas where
persons fail to adopt a sanitary or hygienic lifestyle. Roundworm infection is
common to people who are also known to have adopted a poorly hygienic
lifestyle. Ascariasis presents itself in mild conditions and in some other
cases, the possibility of a severe case and manifestation of the infection have
been reported. In persons suffering from the infection, hundreds or more of the
worms in the body may lead to severe complications which present some
characteristic symptoms.
Symptoms of Ascariasis
Ascariasis has been reported to present a wide range of
symptoms in affected persons, however, some of the symptoms may be attributed
to the benign state of the medical condition or the severe cases of ascariasis
manifestation. Some of the medically established symptoms associated with this
medical condition include; Persistent cough; possible shortness of breath,
Wheezing; vomiting and nausea; bloody stools and diarrhea characterized with
abdominal pain. Also, these symptoms are recorded to be expressed alongside
other symptoms including fatigue and weight loss.
Causes of Ascariasis
Ascariasis, in either of its manifestation, benign or
severe, has been attributed to poor living and hygienic condition, however, the
most widely established cause of the medical condition is the ingestion of food
or water which has been contaminated by faces containing the eggs of the
causative organism, roundworm. Contamination of food or water could be as a
result of improper boiling and treatment of water and food. Also, it has been
established that poor water source such as rivers, lakes, wells situated near
septic tanks may predispose persons to the risk of contracting this medical
condition.
Risk factors of Ascariasis
A number of risk factors have been associated with the
incidence of Ascariasis in humans, however, the principal risk factor is
ingestion of food and water which has been contaminated with the eggs of the
causative organism. The established risk factors which have been established to
be characteristic of Ascariasis include; occurrence in persons aged 10 years or
younger; prevalence in areas with warm temperature and climate which
facilitates the reproduction and development of roundworm eggs, Poor sanitation
and poor personal hygiene.
Complications of Ascariasis
Some complications have been established to be related to
ascariasis, persons affected by the ingestion of roundworm eggs are exposed to
possible complications which include; Nutritional deficiencies, Intestinal
blockage and perforation, and duct blockages.
Diagnosis of Ascariasis
Diagnosis of this medical condition may be done through the
expression of the symptoms attributed to the disease condition in affected
persons, however, in severe cases, diagnosis of ascariasis should be conducted
by qualified medical practitioners. Some of the tests to be conducted in order
to ascertain the medical condition include; Stool tests, Blood tests, X-rays,
Ultrasound and CT scans or MRIs.
Precautions & Prevention of Ascariasis
Some basic precautions should be taken by persons who wish
to prevent themselves from the incidence of this medical condition. The medical
condition may be prevented by overall lifestyle changes. Some of the
recommended precautionary moves include encouragement of hand washing with soap
and water before handling food, proper boiling of food, proper washing of fresh
fruits and vegetables before ingestion, thorough care when travelling and
eating out.
Treatment of Ascariasis
Some of the treatment procedures which have been recommended
for the treatment of ascariasis as a medical condition include; Homeopathic
Treatment of Ascariasis; Acupuncture and Acupressure Treatment of Ascariasis;
Psychotherapy Treatment of Ascariasis; Conventional or Allopathic Treatment of
Ascariasis; Surgical Treatment of Ascariasis; Dietary and Herbal Treatment of
Ascariasis; and Other Treatment of Ascariasis. These treatment procedures may
however be adopted individually or in combination for the best possible results
in the care of the roundworm infection.
Homeopathic Treatment of Ascariasis
Homeopathic treatment of ascariasis is aimed at treating patients
who exhibit severe manifestations of the symptoms which include abdominal pain,
diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea. The homeopathic remedies offered in this
treatment procedure have often time been reported to be fast acting thereby
relieving the patient of pains. Homeopathic remedies have also been reported to
improve the immunity of the child. Importantly, some of the common homeopathic
medicines employed in the treatment of Ascariasis are: Cina, Ter, Spig, and
Valer.
Conventional or Allopathic Treatment of Ascariasis
In allopathic treatment of ascariasis, medications are
administered with the aim of relieving pain and flushing out the pathogen in
the patient’s body. However, it is important to note that some of the drugs
prescribed in the care and treatment of ascariasis may present some side
effects in some persons who exhibit allergies and other reactions to some of
the active ingreduients contained in the administered drugs. Some of the
medications which are administered in the care and treatment of ascariasis
include albendazole, ivermectin and mebendazole.
Surgical Treatment of Ascariasis
Ascariasis may sometime be presented in its severe form
wherein the pathogens have largely multiplied within the cells of the patient
or host organism. In this case, it has been reported that surgical procedure in
the treatment of ascariasis may be employed. It is however important to note
that treatment of ascariasis using the surgical procedure should not be the
first line of action in treating the medical condition especially when the
symptoms presented are characteristically similar to those presented by the
infection in its benign state.
In cases where individuals or patients are
affected by the severe manifestation of roundworm infection which presents some
symptoms which include but is not limited to emaciation or weight loss,
diarrhea, bloody stools, shortness of breath, Intestinal blockage and
perforation, and duct blockages, surgical procedures may be employed in getting
rid of the complications which may have arose from the infection. It is
important to note that the surgical procedure employed in the treatment of
ascariasis caused by roundworm infection is aimed at repairing the damages
which may have been caused to the internal organs of the affected persons as
against the removal of the entirety of the infectious pathogen.
