Ascariasis


What is Ascariasis
Ascariasis is a medical condition characterized by a roundworm infection. This roundworm infection is most common in areas where persons fail to adopt a sanitary or hygienic lifestyle. Roundworm infection is common to people who are also known to have adopted a poorly hygienic lifestyle. Ascariasis presents itself in mild conditions and in some other cases, the possibility of a severe case and manifestation of the infection have been reported. In persons suffering from the infection, hundreds or more of the worms in the body may lead to severe complications which present some characteristic symptoms.

Symptoms of Ascariasis
Ascariasis has been reported to present a wide range of symptoms in affected persons, however, some of the symptoms may be attributed to the benign state of the medical condition or the severe cases of ascariasis manifestation. Some of the medically established symptoms associated with this medical condition include; Persistent cough; possible shortness of breath, Wheezing; vomiting and nausea; bloody stools and diarrhea characterized with abdominal pain. Also, these symptoms are recorded to be expressed alongside other symptoms including fatigue and weight loss.

Causes of Ascariasis
Ascariasis, in either of its manifestation, benign or severe, has been attributed to poor living and hygienic condition, however, the most widely established cause of the medical condition is the ingestion of food or water which has been contaminated by faces containing the eggs of the causative organism, roundworm. Contamination of food or water could be as a result of improper boiling and treatment of water and food. Also, it has been established that poor water source such as rivers, lakes, wells situated near septic tanks may predispose persons to the risk of contracting this medical condition.

Risk factors of Ascariasis
A number of risk factors have been associated with the incidence of Ascariasis in humans, however, the principal risk factor is ingestion of food and water which has been contaminated with the eggs of the causative organism. The established risk factors which have been established to be characteristic of Ascariasis include; occurrence in persons aged 10 years or younger; prevalence in areas with warm temperature and climate which facilitates the reproduction and development of roundworm eggs, Poor sanitation and poor personal hygiene. 

Complications of Ascariasis
Some complications have been established to be related to ascariasis, persons affected by the ingestion of roundworm eggs are exposed to possible complications which include; Nutritional deficiencies, Intestinal blockage and perforation, and duct blockages.

Diagnosis of Ascariasis
Diagnosis of this medical condition may be done through the expression of the symptoms attributed to the disease condition in affected persons, however, in severe cases, diagnosis of ascariasis should be conducted by qualified medical practitioners. Some of the tests to be conducted in order to ascertain the medical condition include; Stool tests, Blood tests, X-rays, Ultrasound and CT scans or MRIs.

Precautions & Prevention of Ascariasis
Some basic precautions should be taken by persons who wish to prevent themselves from the incidence of this medical condition. The medical condition may be prevented by overall lifestyle changes. Some of the recommended precautionary moves include encouragement of hand washing with soap and water before handling food, proper boiling of food, proper washing of fresh fruits and vegetables before ingestion, thorough care when travelling and eating out.

Treatment of Ascariasis

Homeopathic Treatment of Ascariasis

Conventional or Allopathic Treatment of Ascariasis
In allopathic treatment of ascariasis, medications are administered with the aim of relieving pain and flushing out the pathogen in the patient’s body. However, it is important to note that some of the drugs prescribed in the care and treatment of ascariasis may present some side effects in some persons who exhibit allergies and other reactions to some of the active ingreduients contained in the administered drugs. Some of the medications which are administered in the care and treatment of ascariasis include albendazole, ivermectin and mebendazole.

Surgical Treatment of Ascariasis
Ascariasis may sometime be presented in its severe form wherein the pathogens have largely multiplied within the cells of the patient or host organism. In this case, it has been reported that surgical procedure in the treatment of ascariasis may be employed. It is however important to note that treatment of ascariasis using the surgical procedure should not be the first line of action in treating the medical condition especially when the symptoms presented are characteristically similar to those presented by the infection in its benign state. 

In cases where individuals or patients are affected by the severe manifestation of roundworm infection which presents some symptoms which include but is not limited to emaciation or weight loss, diarrhea, bloody stools, shortness of breath, Intestinal blockage and perforation, and duct blockages, surgical procedures may be employed in getting rid of the complications which may have arose from the infection. It is important to note that the surgical procedure employed in the treatment of ascariasis caused by roundworm infection is aimed at repairing the damages which may have been caused to the internal organs of the affected persons as against the removal of the entirety of the infectious pathogen.
